I recently hosted a roundtable with 15 of our incredible Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses Alumni. Held at the downtown Goldman Sachs office. We were joined by the newly appointed President of Goldman Sachs Foundation, Asahi Pompey, GS Managing Partner, and Salt Lake’s General Manager, David Lang, SLC Mayor, Jackie Biskupski and SLCC President, Dr. Deneece Huftalin.
Our lively discussion with small business owners provided insights around the challenges and the loneliness small business owners often face. President Huftalin and Mayor Biskupski discussed the challenges small business CEOs have with finding talent and retaining employees in a tight labor market. Casey Balding of Ferreus Industries, along with Natalie Kaddas, Kaddas Enterprises, and Stephanie Nix-Thomas, Nix Construction, talked about being female leaders in the traditionally male-dominated fields of construction and manufacturing. They’ve had to work hard to be recognized as the face of their companies and be taken seriously by employees and vendors. Jason Olsen, Image Studios, Amelia Wilcox, Incorporate Massage, and Laurlee Morrison, Cakes de Fleur, shared how the program made taught them to think more about the bigger picture and to focus on understanding their financial position to drive decisions.
President Pompey was interested to hear from the alumni about their experiences with growth after the 10,000 Small Businesses program and what additional training they felt was needed to continue to grow. The CEO’s shared thoughts around an advanced 2.0-type program and gratitude for the opportunity to participate in 10KSB. They expressed how connected they’ve remained with alumni from their cohorts and the alumni program in general.
The event concluded with each alum sharing what they would tell themselves as brand new CEO’s today if they could, as well as the best business advice they ever received.
The 10,000 Small Businesses Program has trained 571 small business owners in Utah alone and has changed the fabric and trajectory of small businesses and their visions.
The program has brought business knowledge, confidence, and higher than average growth to most companies that have completed the program.
